Elementary,my dear Watson.

Remember these words? Definitely yes if you love Sherlock Holmes. However, it is a different fact that Sherlock Holmes never said those words exactly.

I am a die-hard Sherlock Holmes fan. I was in 10th standard when I first read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I finished it as fast as I could.
Then I bought all books and now I have lost the count how many times I have read each story. Once you read a couple of opening pages of any Holmes story, you cannot put it down until you finish it. All of the books are great but my favorites are “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” and “A Study in Scarlet”.
The popularity and influence of Holmes can be inferred by the fact that Holmes is the only fictional character that has been inducted as an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Great.

Kudos to the character and the man who created it : Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Many of the statements said by Holmes have become quotes by now. Even “Elementary,my dear Watson”, which is the most famous quote of Holmes, has not been uttered a single time in any of the stories, has become the most famous of them all.

Some of my favorite quotes are:

My name is Sherlock Holmes. It is my business to know what other people don’t know.

It was easier to know it than to explain why I know it. If you were asked to prove that two and two made four, you might find some difficulty, and yet you are quite sure of the fact.

It is quite a three pipe problem, and I beg that you won’t speak to me for fifty minutes. It is more than possible; it is probable.

It is impossible as I state it, and therefore I must in some respect have stated it wrong.

Dr Leslie Armstrong “I have heard your name, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, and I am aware of your profession – one of which I by no means approve.”
Holmes “In that, Doctor, you will find yourself in agreement with every criminal in the country.”

Cut out the poetry, Watson.

It is a small list, all of them are fantastic. Anyway,as a way of paying tribute to my favourite fictional character, I created another gadget. It displays a quotation of Sherlock Holmes each day. By default it will select a quote from any one of the books. But you can select a specific book also.
For example, if you wish to see quotes only from “A study in scarlet”, you can set it. Just click Edit settings in gadgets toolbar and select the book.

What are you waiting for now? Add the gadget to your igoogle and have fun.

As a bonus, I present to you a book titled “THE QUOTABLE SHERLOCK HOLMES ” taken from American Digest.

Download “THE QUOTABLE SHERLOCK HOLMES “

Do you know these facts:

8 is the largest cube in the Fibonacci sequence.
454 is the largest number known that cannot be written as a sum of 7 or fewer cubes.
917 is the only positive number known whose 9th power can be written as the sum of ten 9th powers.

I did not know until I stumbled across ...

I did not know until I stumbled across Erich Friedman’s webpage. This page has a list featuring numbers from 0 to 9999 along with awe-inspiring facts relating to them. Eventhough, some numbers are missing but I am pretty much sure Erich will find some distinct feature for each of them.

As I am learning Google legacy gadgets API these days, a question rose in my mind that why shouldn’t Icreate a widget which will show certain numbers and their specialities? Then I decided to go for it and created the gadget. This gadget displays 3 numbers and their specialities. You will get to see different numbers each day. (You can check this by just changing your system date and reloading the iGoogle page.).

If you want to have a look at the gadget’s source code, its here

Although this widget will be able to show you numbers from 0 to 1100 currently. However, I am working on increasing the count and soon you will be able to view numbers till 9999.

So, add it to your iGoogle from the button below and have fun.

Will like to have your comments on this. And if you have any idea, please tell me.

Update:

A new functionality to the gadget has been added today. Due to this the widget will now display a random quote each minute. You can also set the time limit for reload. Available options are 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes and 10 minutes. Just choose “Edit Settings” from the toolbar of gadget. To have this functionality you may have to delete and again add the widget to see the changes. You can add it from the button below.

Yesterday I wrote my first gadget for personalized Google home page or more popularly known as iGoogle. It’s a small widget that displays “ways to irritate people”. You get to see a new way to irritate people each time you reload the page.

There are some profound tutorials on Google as well as videos on Youtube which edify you how to build these widgets from scratch. I wrote it more from learning perspective. So, let me explain you how I wrote my first gadget.

I read some tutorials, signed up for iGoogle sandbox and decided to go for the OpenSocial API 0.8 and wrote it. Choosing OpenSocial was obvious because your application has a variety of containers to be chosen from them, like iGoogle, Myspace, ning, friendster, orkut etc. For this you can see the source here. Don’t get confused by the name orkut.xml.

Although my initial intention was to write it for orkut. Your browser may not support display of this image. However, I wrote it and tested on iGoogle sandbox which worked well. But when I submitted it to Google directory, and asked some friends to test it, it failed to work. Then I came to know through Google-Gadgets-API group that OpenSocial is currently supported in sandbox only, not in production. Grrrrr…

As I was desperate to see it in production, so I turned towards Legacy Gadgets API and wrote it again. Source code for the new widget can be seen here. There is nothing much to see in this file. All other work is done by the php script it points to.

Eventhough this is the simplest form it can take. I am planning to extend it further. A basic functionality, that I think should be there, is allowing the user to set the number of minutes in which the widget will fetch a new quote. Then the user will not have to see the same quote until he reloads the page or that frame. Besides this, couple of other features will be there.

For now, you can add this widget to your iGoogle page. This will help in improving widget’s ranking and visibility and moreover, it is fun. After all don’t you want to irritate others sometimes?? So, what are you waiting for? Do add it!!! Here is the link

See “wAyS tO IrRITaTe” on your Google homepage
